A Review of Balos Beach, Crete

Being a Greek-American whose parents hail from the island of Crete, I have had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful island many times in my life.  (14 or 15 times? I forget).  There are many great beaches, beautiful mountains, plenty of nature and excellent food – both from the sea and from the land.  One beach that I have never been to – or at least do not remember visiting – is Balos Beach.

Balos Beach is located at the most northwestern point of the island, and to get there you have to take a boat from Kissamos port, or take a modestly sized car over a dirt road for about an hour and a half from Kissamos.

I made the trip to Balos Beach this summer and I opted for the boat ride, which also includes a stop at Gramvousa island, which is on the way back.

If you are planning on visiting the island of Crete, let me give you some advice with regards to whether or not you wish to visit this beach.

Pros
* Beautiful View
* May include a boat ride
* Boat ride includes a stop at the island of Gramvousa
* Gramvousa island is not accessible from the dirt road

Cons
* Long boat ride
* Getting off the boat took 45 minutes as we waited to get onto a small life boat
* Water was very shallow
* Very hard to find some deep water where you can swim

Recommendation:
If you decide to visit Balos Beach, I recommend you rent a slighter bigger than a compact car and drive there yourself. The drive is more than an hour from the nearest town, and you will have to descend down a path which has some beautiful views of the entire beach. Although I did not like the water at this beach, the views were amazing and make the trip worth going at least once in ones lifetime. Additionally, if you take the boat, you get to visit Gramvousa, which had excellent water with beautiful shades of blue. I also decided to hike up the trail to the top of the island which has a giant Venetian castle. It was beautiful and made the trip worth it. Wearing just flip flops is not recommended, I wore a pair of Sanok shoes which made the walk just fine for me.

Here are some pictures from the boat ride from Kissamos Port to Balos Beach:

I took some pictures while I was waiting to get off the boat… it took about 45 minutes.  So some advice for you, when the boat is close to the beach, walk towards the exit of the boat so you get into one of the first boats!

And some pictures of the beach itself… Balos Beach:

On the boat ride back, we stopped at Gramvousa island for about 2 hours.  We also were able to dock at a proper pier, so it did not take 45 minutes to get off the boat! The hike up the hill was excellent, and the views amazing!

Oh… and when you take the small boat from the ferry to get to the actual beach, tell the guy who is steering the boat that he has a nice mustache “oraio moustaki”, and he might just reward you with the honor of steering the boat for a bit!

and the reward…
